Figure, Space, Light
This series of figure paintings has been constructed using particular spaces and places as a source – West Wales and Florence supplement images of London coffee shops and bars.
Often, the idea arises from an observed image which hangs around for months and sometimes years before I establish a narrative which is bound to a particular time of day or extreme light – the ‘magic hour’ of dawn or dusk is often seen as forcing a hallucinatory experience, but the harsh light of a Mediterranean noon or a storm brewing in a summer sky over Martins Heaven in West Wales, can also enforce a sense of ‘dislodged reality’. In these paintings, the filmic and comic book reference is important, and the acidic colouration and harsh contrasts are a long way from the reality that originally motivates me to make the paintings.
