The Studio
This page offers an intimate view into the production of Gethin Evans’ work; whether that be their creation in-studio, en-plein-air, or the small set-ups he creates for his still lives.

National Gallery Foundation Course drawing day in December 1974 - I drew from the Vermeer painting ‘Lady Standing at a Virginal’ - still one of my favourite paintings and great to see it again recently in the sparsely populated National Gallery. The drawing I made benefitted from the very intense Thursday evening classes run by Graham Nickson at Byam Shaw, recently vividly realised by @matthew.collings in one of his colours pencil drawings. The classes would well exceed the two hour time slot followed by a journey to the pub or local wine bar- an education in observation, talking about Art and drinking!🤨🤔🥳

This is the final post of my 10 day challenge to post older work. The Painting is one of a number of paintings I made between 2012 and 2014 based on the theme of Halloween - this one is Italian Halloween. We had just been to Florence and I decided to construct a still life set up (very) loosely based on the Uccello fresco of the Deluge in the Santa Maria Novella. I wanted the forms of the plastic goblet and the green knife to be larger than life - the sliver of blue on the left is a section of a photo taken in Florence, while the small photo on the right is of my parents taken on holiday before I was born - the cloth in the goblet represents a shroud or a spook trying to escape and the brown shapes in the lower right are two limes which decayed while I made the painting. The painting is acrylic on paper and I wanted the colour to be totally synthetic but to also be as close to as possible to what I was looking at. Thanks Rita Smith for suggesting me - I’ve really enjoyed revisiting and reviewing my younger self! Final nomination for the ten day challenge is Joe Allen - @joeallen9012

Day 9 of the 20 day challenge to post older work. Both these pains were made between 2001 and 2003. Painting 1 is about a family views as an ‘insert’ window in the wall. Painting 2 is a nostalgia from the future painting - imagining how the studios at Carpenters road would be developed into luxury apartments at some point in the future - nearly got that one right! Both are oil on board. #figurativepainting #contemporaryfigurativepainting #fineart #tregonygallery #royaldrawingschool #carpentersroadstudios #newyorkstudioschool #streetroadartistsspace #interiors
Day 8 of the 10 day challenge to post older work. A painting from 1992 is one of the largest paintings I’ve ever attempted - 9ft x 10foot- and was painted at Carpenters Road studios. I wanted to ‘open up’ the paint application so that the surface had the look of a small ‘rough’ sketch but on a large scale. It was shown at The a Small Mansion Arts Centre in a show co- curated with Michael Jones entitled Art of the Urban Now. Ultimately I preferred the drawing I made from the painting , which is why the drawing survives and the painting doesn’t I guess. As I neglected to nominate anyone last post I would like to nominate two painters to take up the 10 day challenge to post older work - Paul Butler @paul_butler_spaceofforgetting and Mark Milroy @mark_milroy.

Day 7 of the 10 day art challenge set@by Rita Smith to post older work. These train carriage paintings were made between 1988 and 1991 - I wanted to use the experience of city train journeys to create a sense of interior spaces which could almost be domestic. The London Overground trains seemed very new and shinny at the time - very modern but I also saw them as being like 14th Century Italian paintings. Painting one is 72” x 72” and painting two is 66” x 72” - both paintings were shown at the Newham Leisure Centre in 1991 ( or 1992?) selected by Sonia Boyce - belated thank you! #contemporarypainting #figurativepainting #newhamleisurecentre #largescaleoainting #londonoverground #city #london #tregonygallery #royaldrawingschool #newyorkstudioschool #streetroadartistsspace #hampsteadschoolofart
Day 6 of the 10 day art challenge set by Rita Smith to post older work. These are a series of small acrylic/gouache studies made sometime in the mid 1980’s for larger paintings which either never saw the light of day or were lost/destroyed. I would like to nominate Mary Mabbutt @marymabbuttpainter to take up the art challenge and nominate other artists over the 10 day period. #worksonpaper #colourstudies #figurativepainting #welshartist #contemporarypainting #tregonygallery #royaldrawingschool #newyorkstudioschool #streetroadartistsspace #throwncontemporary #hampsteadschoolofart
Day 5 of my response to Rita Smith nominating me to be part of the art challenge to show older work. These 2 drawings were made in the early 1980’s - the second drawing was exhibited in the Cleveland Drawing Biennale 1982 ( or was it 1984? Not sure and can’t locate the catalogue....)
